Homeopathy Education & Training

The South African Faculty of Homeopathy provides training in homeopathy for medical doctors registered with the Health Professions Council (HPCSA), and offers homeopathic continuing professional development (CPD) seminars and courses for qualified medical and professional homeopaths.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Homeopathy, offered by the Faculty, is accredited by the British Faculty of Homeopathy and by the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA). On successful completion of the course, graduates are awarded the diplomas of the SA Faculty of Homeopathy (DFHom.SA) and the British Faculty (MFHom. UK) and are eligible for registration as homeopaths with AHPCSA.

The South African Faculty of Homeopathy is registered to provide homeopathic training to medical doctors. The course offered by the Faculty does not include anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology and medical subjects, as it is assumed that all students, being medical doctors, are trained in these areas.

If you would like to study homeopathy but are not a medical doctor, the University of Johannesburg(UJ) and the Durban University of Technology(DUT) offer a 5-year full-time Masters Degree in Homeopathy, the M.Tech.(Hom). Besides the Faculty Course for medical doctors, the M.Tech.(Hom) is the only training recognised by the South African Allied Health Professions Council(AHPCSA). For the purposes of registration as a homeopath in South Africa, no correspondence courses are recognised. The Faculty Diploma course is presented at two centres - Johannesburg and Cape Town. The course is in modular form (eight weekend modules per year) and extends over three years. A new course is commenced whenever a sufficient number of applicants have enrolled and a new course is due to start in January 2008. (Another course will only be run after the group starting in January 2008 has completed their modules 3 years later and have completed their final assessments.)

Postgraduate Diploma Course in Homeopathy – Course Structure

A three-year course comprising 25 three-day weekend modules of 20 hours each, providing 500 hours of direct tuition. In addition assignments, study projects and case analyses must be completed.

• 8 three-day weekend modules per year

• Introduction to the philosophy, history, principles, materia medica and clinical application of homeopathy.

• A wide range of acute and chronic psychological and clinical conditions met with in general practice will be covered.

• Case presentations – case-taking, case-analysis, case-management – therapy.

• Homeopharmaceutics – the compounding and dispensing of homeopathic remedies.

• Formative assessment will be applied throughout the three-year period.

• Only students who have achieved an adequate level of homeopathic education, as judged by assessments, and who have a satisfactory attendance record, will be permitted to participate in the final examination process.

Please note that only medical doctors registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa(HPCSA) are eligible to sit the final examination for the Postgraduate Diploma in Homeopathy (DFHom.SA).
